Selecting
a Printer
Selecting a printer is not as easy as
you may think. The printer you use should be a modern printer and the
printer driver must be up-to-date and compatible with not only the
operating system but also the database we use, FileMaker® Pro 5.5.
Often, on Windows PCs, the printer driver can interfere with the proper
operation of FileMaker Pro when it is on the host computer.
Here are a few rules that we must insist upon, especially with PCs:
- Under no
circumstances
can the host computer have a printer that is being shared with other
users.
"File and Printer Sharing" must not be installed.
- The host computer should not be
used for printing when workstations are accessing the software.
- Dot matrix printers cannot be used
at all on the host computer.
- All unnecessary or unused printer
drivers should be removed from your Windows computers.
Ideal printer setup
The most ideal printer situation is a
truly networked laser printer. Many companies make inexpensive,
networkable,
laser printer with built-in 10/100 ethernet print servers. We have had
good
experience with Brother, NEC and HP. These printers have connectivity
using
both TCP/IP and AppleTalk for mixed environments and their printers drivers are, for the most part, compatible
with the Windows version of FileMaker Pro.
